Bistritza - Zheleznitza in December

The snow from the early days of December melted fairly quickly, but the weather kept rainy and wet and we missed a hike last week. Saturday was another rainy day, but Sunday, though still dark and gloomy, was fairly dry, so we made a quick drive to the nearby village of Bistritza and hiked the 6 km trail from Bistritza to Zheleznitza and back along the low circuit trail of Vitosha. The trail is probably one of the most popular places on Vitosha and choosing it was definitely unimaginative, but still a good exercise. This time we decided to skip the picnic, so we carried only water and the DSLR camera and took the total of 12 km in less than 3 hours, keeping a good brisk pace along the muddy tracks.

Though the trail passes predominantly through the woods, with almost no scenic views, I enjoy its unpolished, unobtrusive beauty. In the early afternoon the mists from the top receded down the slopes and added to the mystic wintry atmosphere of the place. I'm so glad we have the option for such hikes at only 20 min drive from home!

  2. I think it would be neat if you had frames of certain areas of the same hike but in different seasons.
