Kauni Striped Socks

Another small project, using left over yarn from a bigger project I knitted this spring - the Rainbow Haruni Shawl. Simple socks, almost vanilla, with some stripes to keep me interested.

Needle: 3 mm, 2.5 mm rib
Time to knit: 4 days

Initially I planned to make these plain vanilla socks, but after I finished the first toe and started the foot I felt that it would get a bit old and boring and I've already done such socks for my son a year ago, so I took the other end of the ball and started striping with it. I'm really glad I did that - these flew off my needles in no time, despite the precious little spare time I had for knitting.

I had also planned to make the heel afterthought, as I thought I wouldn't have enough yarn for a whole pair, but when I reached the heel I measured the remaining yarn and calculated that I had enough and that a continuous heel would look better with this yarn. I used some modified short row heel, but I wouldn't repeat it, the result is not that good as other heels I've tried.

We are enjoying quite sunny and pleasant weather today, hurray!

Rainbow Haruni

This is probably the most power-knitting I've ever done - a lace shawl in less than four days. I cast it on Friday evening, finished it on Monday afternoon, washed it, blocked it and it's now ready to be gifted. I'm so in love with its vibrant colors, I do hope the recipient will like it as much as I do.

Haruni is probably the most popular and the most beautiful free pattern of a triangular shawl - the chart is logical and easy to memorize and at the same time the lace it produces is so spectacular. I've browsed through heaps of photos of finished Haruni shawls and I've never seen a failure, regardless of the colors and yarn - they are all gorgeous.

Kauni is Latvian wool, known for its long section color transitions and Harunis, made from Kauni are bound to be striking - and they are. Making this shawl felt to a little extent like cheating - it's easy to get a great result when knitting a gorgeous pattern with a popular gorgeous yarn :)))

This is my third lace shawl and they've all been for gifts, may be it's time for some selfish shawl-knitting :)

Rainbow Socks

A new pair of socks for Alex, made from Kauni Artistic Rainbow, 8/2. I knitted them again toe up, using the recipe for toe up socks by Charisa Cairn and German short rows for the heel. I love their bright cheery colors and now I'm planning a cardigan with the rest of the yarn, but maybe for autumn, as it is already time for cotton knitting.

And I had another go at the Leopard Cake, but this time I made all the corrections I had planned from last time - doubled the sugar (150 g), sprinkled it with crystal sugar before baking and reduced the cocoa in the lighter brown dough. It's so much better like this! Now I want to make the still too white dough yellow-orange and try adding egg yolks to the dough - next time :)
