Ravensburger Puzzle Mediterranean Harbour

It's been almost three years, since I last assembled a puzzle. I've had this Ravensburger puzzle for several years, but somehow the moment for its assembly never came - until this New Year.

I had meant to take it out earlier, but was so busy with sewing and cooking, that the first free moment came in the evening of January the 1st. Husband was intrigued and quickly joined me in the assembly and in the end he assembled the greater part of it.

Puzzle: Mediterranean Harbour
Manufacturer: Ravensburger 1500 pcs.
Time to assemble: 3 days

:Starting January 01 in the evening

:Morning January 02

:Evening January 02

:Evening January 03

Assembling this puzzle was a true pleasure, Ravensburger is a reputable make and the quality of the puzzle was perfect, the pieces joined ideally and the colors were well chosen. It reminded me why I like assembling puzzles and I feel like repeating the pleasure soon. However I have so many puzzles that I feel more like taking out some of the old ones, rather than buying a new one.

Rendezvous on Myconos Schmidt Puzzle

Last week was a ve-e-ery long weekend in Bulgaria, Easter plus St. George's Day, a whole 10-days mini-vacation (for some). Students had their Easter holidays, Gaby's boyfriend was visiting us and all in all it was a very nice, festive and fun week. I hadn't assembled puzzles in years, so I decided it was the ideal time to open one of my latest acquisitions - it is a Sam Park's picture, made into a 1000 pcs puzzle by Schmidt.

I opened the puzzle on May 1st and finished it on May 10th - it took me the whole 10 day vacation to assemble it, slowly and gradually placing a piece here and there. I enjoyed the process, but I think I'm ready to part with my puzzles, as I've gathered quite a collection and I don't see myself assembling them a second time - somehow my heart is not so much into puzzles any more.

Some process pictures - this is from May 5th

On May 7th I had assembled most of the pieces

On the morning of May 10th - I finished it later that day.

I have one more unopened puzzle to assemble and I plan not to buy any more puzzle before I have done it, who knows when. It is curious how hobbies come and go :)

Colors of Italy - Salumeria Educa 1500 Puzzle

Last week I spent two of my active evenings in futile search for my next knitting and sewing projects. I have 9 balls of Drops Muskat 100% Egyptian cotton and I want to cast on a new summer cardigan. I went through Ravelry, browsed my favourites, pondered over my queued projects, went on the Drops Design site through every single design they have published for Drops Muskat yarn, finally randomly googled images of knitted summer cardigans - nothing. Hours wasted in search and nothing clicked.
I spent Friday evening and all of Saturday sewing a new pair of pants for Gaby (which still need to be photographed and blogged about) and on Sunday I started browsing through my Burdas to decide what to sew next. And again - nothing. After hours of going through patterns, checking the Russian Burda site for amateur works and trying to match them in my mind with my fabrics, not only was I left uninspired, but almost depressed. Until I figured it out - I was just tired of constant sewing and knitting, I needed a break.
I've had two unopened 1500 pcs. puzzles for more than a year and maybe it was time to assemble one of them. I'm a sucker for such corny puzzle pictures of beautiful city sites and I've had four delightful evenings, listening to Poirot mysteries and gradually creating the whole picture:

This is my 5th Educa puzzle and so far I had regarded the brand as one of the reputable ones. However, despite my enjoyment of the puzzle, mostly due to the picture, which is quite to my taste where puzzles are concerned, I have a good mind to write to the company with my complaints. Apart from the fact, that the cutting was of very low quality and the pieces weren't unique in shape and form and were easily replaceable, there are two major blunders in this puzzle: part of the key picture is covered with the company logo and other insignia - this means that this part is to be assembled blindly, which is inadmissible, no respectable company does that and this is the first time I see such puzzle cover design; and secondly - there are two black spots, one of them rather significant, which should not have been there and are not part of the picture. If this was a watch or a purse I would immediately assume that it was a counterfeit, but who would counterfeit a puzzle?!

Anyway, I feel refreshed after four evenings of puzzle assembly and last night I knitted a large gauge sample for Joy cardigan by Kim Hargreaves and traced a T-shirt Burda pattern, which I might turn into a tunic for me. Back to old creatively inspired me :)

Harbor Garden Puzzle

My second Sung Kim puzzle I bought from the sale. I thought I'd keep it for later, but we've been hit by the Lucifer heat wave and assembling puzzles seems the only one of my hobbies I can pursue while I'm slowly melting :)

Terrace Cafe Puzzle

Yesterday I assembled another puzzle by Anatolian, which is becoming my favourite brand lately. A big puzzle on-line shop had a sale and I bought two puzzles by Sung Kim. When it comes to puzzles I really enjoy his paintings - appealing to the popular eye, without being too cheesy. I wouldn't hung his paintings on the wall, they are obviously haltura, but I find them perfect for puzzles - maybe because they are made to be turned into puzzles, and I much prefer assembling such pictures to puzzles made from photos or classic masterpieces.

This time I spread my puzzle mat on the bed and combined the assembly of the pieces with listening to lectures by Geoffrey West on scale and complexity. It all started with his talk with Sam Harris about his latest book From Cells to Cities, which intrigued me and I must have further listened to at least six or seven lectures of his I found on youtube on the topic. This was a Sunday well spent!

Sunny Morning - Anatolian Puzzle 1000

It's been a while since I last assembled a puzzle and I had forgotten how addictive it can be for me. For the same reason I love cross stitching, the gradual emergence of the picture from the thousands of pieces / stitches is so captivating.

This latest puzzle was bought more than a month ago but I waited for the right free time - like the long Easter weekend, for I knew - once I started it there will be little else done at home until I finish it.

The brand Anatolian is new to me, the quality is good, though I still find Schmidt first and  Ravensburger second. Anatolian would be somewhere third in my personal rating together with Educa and a few other brands.
