I made my own tailor's ham and sausage. I believe I used this free pattern, but there are plenty of others out there. The construction is pretty simple, the only requirement - use 100% cotton or wool fabric. In my case the fabric is 100% cotton - upholstery cotton for the front and ranforce cotton for the back.
The Cuban cigar is a reference for the scale of the hams. An acquaintance returned from Cuba and brought cigars, but as neither of us smokes, I'm just using it as a photo prop :)
I sewed the "sacks" last week, but only today found the time to visit
our local pet store and buy the wood shavings. And to my utter amazement
the package of 15 l, 0.5 kg was not enough to fill up the sausage, so I
had to shorten it.
I haven't actually cut the fabric, just tucked the
empty part in and closed the opening on the sewing machine, so that if
the sleeve ham proves useful and needed, I'll buy another package of
wood shavings and fill it all up properly.
All of the fabrics I used are small remnants from older projects.
I still haven't used the hams, as I just finished making them, but my advice to my future self, if I decide to make them again - leave an opening big enough for your hand to go in and compress the wood shavings and leave the opening at the upper narrow part of the hams, not at the sides, as it is much easier to fill and compress the shavings downward.
