Peak Bachun

This year March seems to be the coldest month of the year - the temperatures are well bellow zero at night (-10C recently), it's been snowing almost every day (at least in the mountainous regions, like Sofia), spring seems so far away and I can't wait for this long winter, constant crisis and streams of bad news to be over!!!

Last weekend it snowed / rained almost incessantly and we missed our hike, but this Sunday was at least partially sunny with very little wind, so we decided to have a tiny little and easy hike (ha, so we thought!) near Sofia.

The first part of our plan was correct - Gorni Lozen is really only 15 min away from home by car, which is part of of the reason why Lozen mountain is one of our preferred destinations. The other part of the plan - the quick and easy hike, for which we didn't even bring any food or refreshments, just a small bottle of water, turned out to had been reckoned wrong.

The recent snowfall had provided a thick snow cover on the ground. The paths out of the village were trodden at the beginning, and we happily hopped along under the gorgeously blue skies and white trees. Until we reached a resting place with some benches, where our path stopped.

Hike info:

Destination: peak Bachun (1150 m)
Mountain: Lozen
Total length: 7.5 km
Elevation gain: 400 m
Total duration (plus picnic): 3 hours
Average difficulty: 5 / 10

Me-made items, worn on this hike:

Husband: men's boxers, Knip Mode cargo pants
I: socks, lingerie, Pull Irlandais, CC copycat hat, Borika gloves, scarf

However, a roundabout path to another peak had been trodden, so we decided to follow along it, despite the detour, hoping that there might have been tourists in our direction.

But no, soon we came to a place, where we had to abandon the traced path and take the trail to the peak, wading through the deep snow. It was steep and difficult and lonely, but we did it - we traced a path in the snow and climbed the peak!

The view from the ridge - Rila and Iskar Reservoir.

Rila

and Vitosha

The descent was so much easier - we climbed the peak in two hours and descended in less than an hour.

I liked the place and now I'm planning a spring/summer climb of peak Bachun, but from another starting point.
