Boyana Waterfalls 2021

Today's was an impromptu hike to the Boyana Waterfalls. We had planned a hike from the middle station of Dragalevtzi chair lift to Kamen Del hut and back to Dragalevtzi, last night I checked at three different sites the opening hours of the lift station and to my utter amazement today we found the station closed down and abandoned. Somehow it has escaped my notice that there have been some controversies around that lift station and it has been closed for years, so nobody has bothered to change the information on the respective sites!

Anyhow, we were in the mountain and ready for hiking, so we decided to continue from the closed lift station to the Boyana Waterfalls and back. The trail runs entirely through the forest, which is excellent on such a hot August day, the air in the forest was fresh and around the waterfalls - even cool.

Once again - just a few phone photos, I've taken pictures and posted about Boyana Waterfalls here often enough - look at this blog post from 2011, how small the children are there!

:The Boyana Waterfalls. Right now, after all the heat and lack of rain during the last two months, the waterfall is probably at its lowest capacity, but it will be full again in the spring.

  1. Why is there a controversy about the lift? Environmental?

    1. The owner, a dubious businessman, closed for safety reasons. His company insists on changes in the law on Vitosha (which has a national park status), which would allow him to cut in the forests, allegedly for building a brand new lift along a new track (and probably for new ski tracks and facilities), while the city council is opposing the cutting of the forest on Vitosha and insists on rebuilding a new lift, using the existing track.
