The Seven Rila Lakes 2025

The second half of August this year is kind of cold and even rainy, with occasional thunderstorms in the mountains. I wanted very much to visit the Seven Rila Lakes this summer and when I checked the weather forecast for last week and noticed, that the only perfect day for a hike there was Thursday - the dice was cast - we had to free Thursday and drive to Rila.

It was not an easy task, as on Wednesday, apart from a lot of work, we had our goodbye dinner with Gaby and her boyfriend and I wanted to dedicate our last day together to them, but we managed. Thursday, at 10:30 we were at the lower lift station of the Seven Rila Lakes. We, and everybody else and their granny, so we had to wait on a long queue for the lift, but around 11:40 we were finally at the Rila lakes hut - the start of the track.

Two years ago we came up with a route, that passes by the lakes and even a few other lakes, but mostly escapes the major tourist tracks. We decided to follow it this year too and I am so happy we did, as hiking with the crowd is definitely not my idea of a perfect hike day.

As promised, the day was warm and sunny, with some cooling wind. We kept a good pace and an hour and a half into the hike we were at the Panitza lake, where we had a small pause and a snack before the big climb to the Green ridge (Zeleni rub).

Finally on the Green ridge, with some of Urdini lakes at the background
On Zeleni peak, two of the Seven Rila lakes and the big Paniza lake down behind me
Razdela, the crossroad of some major trails in Rila
The Malyovitza ridge, with some of our favourite peaks, including Ushite, where we recently climbed
Pazar dere and the Kalin peaks, with Ivan Vazov hut
From Razdela we took a trail along the Otovitza ridge, towards peak Otovitza. The Eyedrop (Salzata) lake
The obligatory photo with all of the seven lakes at a glance. This is the only place from the ground, where one can see all of the lakes at once

Hike info:

Destination: Mt. Otovitza (2696 m)
Mountain: Rila
Total length: 18 km
Elevation gain: 600 m
Total duration (plus picnic and rests): 6 hours
Average difficulty: 6.5 / 10

Me-made items, worn on this hike:

Husband: boxers, Burda cargo pants, Grey Burda hoodie
I: lingerie, Sabrina Slims, Burda henley blouse, hoodie

We had our late lunch on Otovitza peak and from there we started down the steep trail towards the Eye (Okoto) lake
A short photo pause at the Eye - the deepest (35 m) and my most favourite of the Seven lakes

The Kidney lake
From Bubreka (The Kidney lake) we took the lower trail by the rest of the lakes - the Twins, the Trefoil, the Fish lake and the Lower lake.
With some really delicious raspberry eating we managed the hike in just 6 hours, quite a nice athletic tempo, just in time for the lift back to the car and the long drive back to Sofia. Next year we plan a two day hike around the lakes, combined with the Skakavitza waterfalls, but we'll see if that happens :)

The Seven Rila Lakes

It's been almost two weeks, since we went to the Seven Rila Lakes, but I've been so busy these days, that I simply can't find the energy to blog.

Still, I can't skip posting about this hike, which is usually the height of our hiking year. I've said it many times and it is still true - this place is my favourite hiking spot and this year we composed an especially interesting and rewarding route, passing along both of our favourite ridges and by all of our favourite lakes, while avoiding the crowds of tourists around the lakes in high season.

:This time we started from the Seven Rila Lakes hut along the lower trail towards the Fish lake.
:The Lower lake

Hike info:

Destination: Mt. otovitza (2696 m)
Mountain: Rila
Total length: 17 km
Elevation gain: 600 m
Total duration (plus picnic and rests): 6 and a half hours
Average difficulty: 6.5 / 10

:The Fish lake.

:From here we deviated from the usual trail and took the steep path towards peak Haramiyata.
:This was probably the steepest part of the route. As we climbed, one after the other the lakes became visible
:After the saddle under haramiyata peak we descended to one of our favourite lakes and had some power snacks, enjoying the view of its beautiful waters
:And up we continued towards Zeleni Rid
:On top of the ridge, with Urdini lakes behind me. From here we continued along the ridge until we reached Razdela - the crossroad of several major routes in Rila.

Me-made items, worn on this hike:

Husband: boxers, Knipmode cargo pants, Grey Burda hoodie
I: lingerie, Sabrina Slims, Burda henley blouse, hoodie

:The other side of the mountain - Kalinite peaks and Pazar dere

:We continued along the Otovitza ridge towards peak Otovitza
:All of the Seven lakes at a glance
:The highest point of our hike - peak Otovitza (2696 m)
:On the peak. Here we had our lunch. It is always surreal to me to dine on top of a high peak, with a view to the lakes
:From Otovitza we took the very steep trail downwards to the Eye lake
:The Eye
:The Kidney. We took the trail by the other four lakes and closed the loop at the Seven Rila Lakes hut, from where we had started. This was probably our best hike to the lakes so far, definitely the ultimate route!

Seven Rila Lakes 2022

Our annual, seventh hike to the Seven Rila Lakes, one of my most favourite places in the country.

This summer the weather in the mountains is somewhat unstable, with frequent rains and thunderstorms, but we managed to find a day, that was convenient for us and with favourable weather conditions and off we went, starting very early in the morning.

:The first two of the lakes, seen from the ridge above the Seven Rila lakes Hut.

Hike info:

Destination: Mt. otovitza (2696 m)
Mountain: Rila
Total length: 16 km
Elevation gain: 600 m
Total duration (plus picnic and rests): 5 hours
Average difficulty: 6.5 / 10

:We happened upon the White Brotherhood, kind of christian-yoga sect, who gather every August at the Sunny Meadow to meditate, sing and dance

:The Kidney Lake and the Sunny Meadow from above
:The Eye, the deepest of the Seven
:On the Lake Peak

:After the Lake Peak we continued our hike towards the Razdela - a cross point of several major trails in Rila

Me-made items, worn on this hike:

Husband: boxers, Knipmode cargo pants
I: lingerie, Sabrina Slims, hoodie

:From Razdela we continued along the Otovitza ridge towards Mt. Otovitza
:The Kalin peaks, the Big Pazar dere and Ivan Vazov hut down there

:The views from Otovitza ridge were gorgeous in every direction and from some of the sections all of the Seven Rila Lakes were visible at a glance

:At Mt. Otovitza. We had our lunch on the peak, with a gorgeous view to the Kalin peaks
:And then we took the extremely steep trail down from Mt. Otovitza to the Eye lake
:At the Eye from the other direction
:After the Eye we followed the trail, which passes near the remaining four lakes, thus making a giant figure eight around the area. The Twin lake
:The Trifoil
:The Fish lake and the Rila lakes hut. The area around the two big huts was covered with tents, probably because of the White Brotherhood gathering
