Alinsky Monastery March 2025

What a perfect day was it today for hiking! Sunny, warm, without being hot, quiet and with almost no wind. The beloved trail from the village of Plana to Alinsky monastery and back was completely empty and the only fly in the honey, a very tiny fly, was the mud - because of the cold and snow during the week the trail was quite slippery and muddy at places.

Amazing, there was even snow. It is definitely this week's snow, as there's no way there was snow there last week, when the temperatures were in the high 20es.

Hike info:

Date:  21 March 2025
Destination: Alinsky Monastery
Mountain: Plana
Total length: 13 km
Elevation gain: 200 m
Total duration (plus picnic and rests): 4 hours
Average difficulty: 3 / 10

Me-made items, worn on this hike:

I: lingerie, Lotte Sinclair blouse, ankle warmers
Husband: men's boxers, Burda cargo pants, orange blouse

It is still early for the trees on Plana and though it was warm, the grass is still brown and the trees are still bare. The only flowers we saw were plenty of purple crocuses and green hellebores.

We had our usual picnic on the hill above the church, with this wonderful view to the snowy peaks of Rila - who wouldn't hike for 13 km to have a lunch with such a view :) !

One of the big attractions of this route for me in springtime is the crisp clear view to Rila. This scenery never gets old!

Kokalyane 2025

The weather during the first week of February has been unusually sunny, however very cold. In all frankness, probably normal cold for February, but lately we've gradually come to expect winters to be much warmer and temperatures below and just a degree or so above zero nowadays seem to me too cold, though it is mid-winter.

For today's hike we chose a trail we've hiked only once before, from the village of Kokalyane to Kokalyane Monastery and up to the ridge of the mountain. The trail is fairly short, but steep and a good exercise. The beginning of the trail was covered with frozen snow and we had some worries that the climb could be problematic, but luckily, the trail itself was completely free of snow and ice and quite easy to hike.

Hike info:

Destination: Kokalyane Monastery  (1060 m) round trail
Mountain: Plana
Total length: 8 km
Elevation gain: 430 m
Total duration (plus picnic): 3 h
Average difficulty: 4 / 10

Only half an hour quick paced hiking brought us in front of the doors of Kokalyane Monastery. From what I understood, the grounds of the monastery are closed for the public and only the church was open.

We had a quick glimpse and continued up along a steep side track. Next time we plan to explore the wider track behind the monastery, which, a bit longer, according to the map leads to the same place on the ridge of the mountain.

Lozen and the skirts of Rila on the horizon.

We had our picnic on a sunny meadow and home-made olives bread with cream cheese and ham has never tasted so delicious!

Me-made items, worn on this hike:

Husband: boxers, orange hat, Burda longsleeve, Burda Cargo pants
I: lingerie, Burda blouse, hat, gloves, scarf

The return trail was barely noticeable through the oak forest, more like a spring water gutter than a path, with lots of fallen trees and not a single person in sight. We should try this trail sometime in spring or summer, as I'm sure it looks much prettier in its green outfit :)

Manastirishte January 2025

Today was the last of a few beautiful and sunny days in a row and we had to go out and enjoy the sun and the clean air, especially now, with the heavy levels of air pollution in Sofia.

We chose a light and open trail that we've walked so many times, that it feels like home - from the village of Plana to peak Manastirishte and back along an alternative track.

The sky was surrealistically blue, the air was crisp and the trail was empty - the perfect hike.

Hike info:

Destination: peak Manastirishte (1338 m)
Mountain: Plana
Total length: 8 km
Elevation gain: 160 m
Total duration (plus picnic): 3 hours
Average difficulty: 3 / 10

Me-made items, worn on this hike:

Husband: boxers, Burda cargo pants, Burda hoodie, orange hat
I: lingerie, Sinclair Lotte Blouse, Central Park Hoodie, black hat, knitted socks

Because of the relatively high temperatures these last few days, we expected soft soggy snow and mud, but the trail was actually not that bad - there were strips of deep wet snow, but most of the trail was fairly dry and we were not soaking wet at the end.

We took a few quick photos at the peak and turned back

The small chapel on the peak

This is a picture I took from our picnic place - on the sunny slopes under the peak. We had a cup of warm herbal tea with a sip of rum and oatmeal pie with feta cheese, which I had baked early in the morning.

Alinsky Monastery 2024

Leisurely walk to Alinsky Monastery and back along the fairly easy and level trails on Plana mountain. When we don't feel like travelling far and long, Plana is always a good idea.

St. Kyprian's chapel at the beginning of the trail. Unfortunately, half of the unique tree next to the chapel has died, probably hit by lightning

The day was very warm and sunny and our hoodies and jackets stayed in the backpacks.

Hike info:

Date:  26 October 2024
Destination: Alinsky Monastery
Mountain: Plana
Total length: 13 km
Elevation gain: 220 m
Total duration (plus picnic and rests): 4 hours
Average difficulty: 3 / 10

Me-made items, worn on this hike:

Husband: boxers, Burda cargo pants, Burda blouse, Burda Hounds' Tooth Hoodie
I: lingerie, "Page" hoodie, leg-warmers

The beech trees are in their best autumnal clothing at the end of October

We had a long picnic in the sun on a hill above the old church, once part of a big monastery

There are so many more beautiful places to visit in Autumn, I hope the coming November will bring us sunny and warm weekends.
